Description: Critical Composition
Writing assessment and instruction have made a dramatic shift towards critical writing with the integration of the Common Core. In this segment, students will develop skills to read and respond to texts in a systematic, formulaic fashion to support testing success. Skills included in this segment include: utilizing graphic organizers to structure quality responses as well as analyzing, and further citing evidence from news articles to support response claims.Creative Writing
Students will draw inspiration from the creative works of established authors in the literary community to create their own unique short stories in a variety of genres. Instruction will focus on aspects of quality storytelling, strengthening organizational balance, word choice/vocabulary development, and effective use of literary devices.
